IMI Information Sheet for Candidates
The Institute aims to build a network of highly trained and skillful psychotherapists with depth knowledge about psychodynamic principles and psychoanalytic theory, as well as theoretical and technical precepts of the Masterson Approach, developed to effectively treat patients with borderline, narcissistic and schizoid disorders of the self.
Time commitment
The IMI training program consists of three years of formal coursework (3-4 hours) plus weekly clinical supervision (50 mins).
Mode of delivery
As the IMI course is international, classes and supervision are all conducted online.
Structure of training years
The course is organized into fall and spring semesters of 16 weeks (aligning with the USA academic year).
Scheduling of classes
The class timetable is not arranged until all candidate applications have been received. The days and times of classes will depend on students’ geographical locations and will be discussed directly with the student group in order to accommodate all time zones.
Learning modes
Classes are conducted in a seminar format. Active participation by all class members is strongly encouraged. Required reading is part of the coursework.
Reading component
A list of books and articles for each study unit will be provided to students at the beginning of each semester. Students will need to consistently budget sufficient time to cover the required weekly reading. Reading time will vary, but it is likely to be 3-6 hours per week.
Reading material will be made available to students through an online platform.
Supervision component
Supervision of clinical work is undertaken throughout the three years, both in the Continuous Case seminar, where students and a faculty member provide feedback to presenters, and through weekly individual supervision with a faculty member.
Each student is assigned a new supervisor at the start of each year of the program.
Scheduling of individual supervision
Scheduling of supervision sessions is worked out between the student and the supervisor.
Written Assignments
Two comprehensive case studies are required to be submitted during training – one midway through the course and a final paper toward the end of the course.

| Supervision: | $85 USD per session | (16 meetings per semester) |
A pro-rata semester fee is payable to IMI in advance of the start of each semester.
Supervision fees are payable directly to the supervisor.
Personal psychotherapy
The Institute encourages the full development of personal and professional capacities and strongly recommends personal psychotherapy to candidates, which is sought independently.
